Too Fancy for Pants

Hope y'all had amazing weekends! We attended S' company Holiday party on Saturday. That's a story on its own...I'll save that for another post. But here are some pics for now...

Wool Sweater Coat - Vintage, Scarf - Winners, Satin Clutch - Prada

Since I knew S wouldn't let me post a photo with him in it, I did the next best thing and I found someone else who'd hold my hand....

Yes, I'm a dork...

Anyway...I recently met up with my friend K...remember the one I met at the Jimmy Choo for H&M launch, that snagged a bag for me? This time we went for dinner. And didn't even have to wait in line :)

We went to a resto chain that recently opened. It's not new but new at that location. The food was awesome, especially the dessert - a warm white chocolate brownie topped with whipped cream and served with vanilla ice cream....unbelievably good. But the girls that worked there, seemed...um...a little *underdressed*.

No, we didn't hit a shady wing joint. And it certainly wasn't a 5-star resto. But *classy* enough that you'd spend about $35-40/person without drinks or dessert. Yet management seemed to think it'd be a good idea to establish a dress code that left you wondering time and time again, "Um, why isn't she wearing...pants???" The Servers wore pants but the resto also had girls prancing around, mostly just walking back and forth...perhaps igniting fights amongst couples on their first dates. And occasionally bringing dishes to your table. One girl came to our table with a huge dessert plate asking if we'd ordered it...um, we were just about to take the first bite of out of our entrées - poor thing was utterly perplexed when we told her we hadn't ordered it. Too cold to think clearly? Perhaps.

Right now it's friggid cold in Toronto. My glasses have already started to steam up when I get indoors from being out in the cold. Minis are one thing. But stretching and pulling a top down, no matter how much you fidget with it, still makes it a top. All K and I could think was "Where are your pants?" or "But, why'd you leave your pants at home?" or "I can't take my mother here". She'd love the food but the *scenery* not so much.

Anyhoots K and I had a really good time. 2 1/2 hours flew right by. And we left with our stomachs full, and hurting just a little from all the laughs. We are definitely meeting up again.

Seeing as some of these girls looked young enough to still be living at home, another thought that crossed our minds was "There's no way in heck your parents let you leave the house like that". Which brings me to this question: growing up, did you ever leave the house then change into something else that you knew your parent(s) wouldn't approve of?
I di...I'll tell you my answer in my next post ;)
xx Ela

  2. that photo is soo cute! What a great holding hands photo! :) I never did that, but my mom wasn't too strict with dress code....then again, I never tried to leave the house looking like I was working the corner. haha. She was more strict on me not leaving the house under-dressed. When everyone else was wearing pajama pants and flip-flops to class in high school I was not allowed. I still remember my mom going nuts and saying, "what if you are in an accident and have to walk really far to get help?!" uh mom...i'm pretty sure we lived in a suburban area and there is no way i'd be walking around on desolate roads in my pj pants and flip-flops...thats what a cel phone is for right?
When I had get-up and go day at school during spirit week...yeah, mom bought me new pajamas and I think I spent more time getting ready for it than I would have on a normal day!

  4. Cute pictures. =)

Answer: Nah... I am the baby of 4 so I got away with a lot... I didn't have to put on an act for them... Unlike my brothers and sister.. I was allowed to stay out way past curfew.. I actually had my mom write notes for my friends and I incase we got pulled over. But if it was my brothers or sister they would get locked out of the house (not so much my sister, she spent all her time with her bf).... ha ha ha.... Oh the joys of being the baby! =)

  7. I love that picture of you "holding hands" very cute. So over the break I had a dream that you moved to DC and became my personal shopper and we were in a store shopping together. Also, in the dream you had really long hair. I was a little bummed when I woke up and realized it wasn't real :(

I never left my house and changed later however one time I was visiting my mom and her boyfriend (who was essentially my step dad despite them not being married) and I was wearing a short jean skirt. He goes to my mom "are you going to let her wear that" and my mom goes "well yes, she's 22". haha.

  8. You are not a dork... I love you even more (is that possible?!?) for that picture with the lighted person holding your hand. And that leopard scarf makes me smile real big... I love it!!
I was a pretty tame kid, but my sister was ALWAYS getting told to go upstairs and change. Which she did... but snuck her other outfit in her bag. How my parents did not catch on to this I do not know...

  16. You looked great, as always!

I was a super good girl growing up, so I never changed after leaving the house. I was too scared! lol

  17. you look so pretty!

My parents weren't too strict about what I wore and I never wore anything that revealing but I do remember I had this one cute blue top that showed my midriff and I would sneak that one out to wear. haha.

We have a restaurant here like that too. The food is good and all the waitresses are these cute petite things that wear tiny little outfits. They're pretty much known for their "hot waitresses". I just go there for the food. :)

  20. Love your outfit... gorgeous coat! Hope you had a lovely weekend and your story of the resto girls made me laugh. It sounds like such an odd combination... seriously? Either you open an establishment and call it Hooters or you just get rid of the skantily clad women... doesn't make sense to me...

I never changed outfits after I left the house, but I did favor very short minis and cut-off jeans as a teenie. To this day I actually wonder why my parents allowed me walk around like that. There are actually moments where I wish they had been less tolerant when it came to my fashion experiments ;-)

  21. COME ON S!!! SHOW YOUR FACE!!! hahahah! ;)

oh gosh.. pantless servers? i thought some of the restos here were bad enough with girls boobs poppin' out. I've never left the house then changed into something else but in elementary school in HK, i had to wear uniforms so i would leave the house then roll it up to make it shorter. hhahhaha!

and p.s - so cool that you and h&m bag friend have started this friendship!

  22. hahahaha the resto story... :P

love the pic with the light kiddies holding your hand... but why is S being so shy?

btw, I've never even asked Boyfriend whether he likes it that I post pix of him now and then, but never heard him complain either, so I guess it's ok!

  24. I absolutely love the second photo - I have never seen a light display like that before, but I adore it. And you look gorgeous in that white coat - I keep seeing Blair Waldorf whenever I look at you, what with the coat, the tights, the heels. You look absolutely stunning! :)

  27. Cute pics, love the lights and your darling outfits! I tried to leave the house, but my mom always thought my top was too low. And no, I didn't change but I should have!

  28. Wow, that scarf is so chic, and also a bit wild. I love love you classed it up with the white coat. Also, you're writing is always so funny and witty, Ela! Are you a writer? You're very astute and also hysterical. I love it!

  29. You are so gorgeous! Your skin always glows!
And AMEN, my mom and dad were very strict on how we dressed. More parents should be like that. Yes, your style is a way to express yourself but what mother wants their daughter to express themselves as a pantsless prostitute?? lol

    ReplyDelete
  30. You look radiant, Ela, and I just adore your leopard print scarf!!

My mom used to be so strict about my dressing, I'm not allowed to go out in shorts! Now she has somewhat relaxed a little, but nothing too extreme though. I only wear more racy stuff when I'm traveling out of the country lol:P

  31. That scarf is so gorgeous lady! Glad you hear you had a fun weekend. Let's trade weather shall we?

  32. bah. i am so glad the food was good, but servers in skimpy clothes would probably annoy me to high heaven. ugh! TACKY TACKY! especially in November in TORONTO?!?!? that is insane!

and you look gorgeous in the photos. you look a bit like a chick i used to work with years ago, except i like YOU and i didn't like HER. :)

  33. I love that white coat! You look so classy and elegant. It reminds me of Audrey (Hepburn). :) Oh, and I love that scarf too. So glamtastic. (Yes, that's a word. I think).
Hmmm...when I first started reading about that restaurant I was stunned. "Ela, you took your new friend to Hooters?" I asked my computer, perplexed. That didn't seem like you at all! LOL! But now I am intrigued as to which restaurant you went to. It sounds appalling. Can you imagine the families who went there, not knowing what to expect? Gah. Oh well. I'm glad it was you and K and not you and like your grandmother or something. Haha. At least the food was good! :)

  37. i never did that with my parents. i'd get the comments like "you are going out in THAT?!" or "please take a jacket" but that's it. my mum would always try to fuss with my clothing as I was leaving- pull the skirt down, pull the top down- oops! too much cleveage!- pull it up again... and now when i go out at night that's all i want to do when i see girls, i cant believe some of the stuff they wear! or, nearly not wear. esp. now since its summer!

looovving your coat, i wish it were cold enough here to wear gorgeous coats like that!

    ReplyDelete
  38. i love the second picture, haha, its too cute!!
hmm..good question, I don't recall doing anything naughty like that, but it would have been a good story to tell if I did :)

  39. You're so beautiful! Yes yes I know I've said that 1.ooo.ooo times but it's so true!!!

  40. You look beautiful, love that vintage coat! I think it is sweet that you made afriend out of the crazy H & M shopping experience!

For the question. Well....I was really wild in highschool and I am suprised at a lot of what I wore but I didn't have to sneak anything but my belly ring. When I got caught with a pierced my belly (yet again, and back then we pierced them ourselves usually) then I lost the car keys so that was one thing I remember having to put on after I left the house :o)

  41. Love that 2nd picture! Too cute :)
