Name Calling

S and I tease each other a lot. It's what we do with people we love. We also have a thing for calling each other names. No, not those names. We tend to make up words actually. So the other day in the car, while he was driving a *tad* over the speed limit, I called him a "squindrel". Kinda like half scoundrel, half squirrel.

S: What'd you call me?
E: A squin-drel. Keep up.
S: What the heck is that?
E: Does it matter?

Suddenly I pictured S and I as little kids. Me calling him names with him looking at me with a blank stare. Me having to explain myself, him being a gnat. Him hogging everything, me screaming "MINE!" Suddenly it dawned on me...

E: I'm glad we met later in life.

S: What? Why?

E: Mmm...I don't think we would've liked each other as kids.

S: [Laughs] Of course not...we don't like each other now.

E: [Laughs].....squindrel.
And that folks, is how we stay happily married.
Hope you had a fabulous weekend!

  1. I think the languages we invent as lovers are really fascinating. It's not something you really talk about much as "normal" people -- so thanks for sharing! Squindrel is actually really fun to say! My man calls me a bitch-puff. What the heck does THAT mean? He insists it's cute. I think it might be mean....and a little cute.

  2. Haha! I like babbling to my hubs in my own made up language too. Oh yeah we would've totally annoyed each other if we were kids. XP

  8. Love the new word! I think all couples have their own little words/inside jokes. That's what makes it fun.

I think if K and I had met even 5 years ago it wouldn't have worked. We wouldn't have been in the right place for each other.

  10. LOL... squindrel is a pretty awesome word! We tend to have our own language as well, but it's not as original. Basically taking an existing word and pronouncing it completely different ;-)

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

  17. Spencer and I have known each other for a long time, and weve had that discussing before of what would have happened had we gotten together sooner (we both had crushes on each other on and off for years) and we dont think we would have worked out as well. One of us would have wanted to be free for awhile, or to travel abroad, one of us would have been too busy/immature/etc.....
We realize that everything happened for a reason, and when the time happened and the fates aligned it all just clicked. It was natural...and it still is!
Everything happens for a reason :)

  20. Squindrel... too funny.

N and I sort of are like this. He more than I.

He bastardizes my name... with I ought'n go into with you or here, but one day you will find out. All the ways he f*cks up my name makes him giggle and me wrinkle my nose in annoyance, but in the end his incessant giggling gets the better of me.

All the laughing together definitely renews the love.

  24. Haha, so cute! Agree with the comments here, little silly things like this is what keeps the marriage alive after all the years! This is probably a *couple thing* as we're the same way. If I write down all our made-up words, I probably could compile a mini dictionary!
